Dakota Johnson cast as 50 Shades lead

After all the speculation and with some big names mentioned, the lead in the hotly anticipated adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey has gone to Dakota Johnson.

The 23-year-old actress is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson ans is best known to audiences for her roles in 21 Jump Street, The Five Year Engagement and short-lived sitcom Ben and Kate.

She'll also next be seen opposite Aaron Paul in the video game adaptation Need for Speed.

Other actresses who had been linked to the role of Anastasia include Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Olsen.

The role of Christian is still to be confirmed and the film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, best known for Nowhere Boy.

50 Shades of Grey will be released on August 1, 2014
