Wisdom from The Green Mile

“Heavyweight champion” might not be a term often associated with Stephen King. But as far as the literary universe is concerned, it feels like a fitting title.

The 66-year-old author behind many of the most lauded novels of the last century has given us many wise words to live by. But it's The Green Mile set in the Cold Mountain Penitentiary that contains some of his wisest words to date. Let the next 15 quotes prove it:

“It's strange how pain marks our faces, and makes us look like family.”

“Sometimes, the embers are better than the campfire. It's strange, but it's true.”

“Time takes it all, whether you want it to or not.”

“Weird love's better than no love at all.”

“A dimwit thinks nothing is funny unless it's mean.”

“Sometimes there is absolutely no difference at all between salvation and damnation.”

“Like some dogs: kick them once and they never trust you again, no matter how nice you are to them.”

“What our parents tell us when we are small seldom goes ignored, no matter how foolish it may be”

“When you spend your life taking care of mudmen, you can't help getting a little dirty yourself.”

“The world turns, that's all. You can hold on and turn with it, or stand up to protest and be spun right off.”

“Life is a capricious business.”

“Sometimes we find others in that darkness, and sometimes we lose them there again.”

“A lot of things don't matter, but it doesn't keep a man from wondering about them, I've noticed.”

“I believe that the combination of pencil and memory creates a kind of practical magic, and magic is dangerous.”

“A man with a good wife is the luckiest of God's creatures, and one without must be among the most miserable, I think, the only true blessing of their lives that they don't know how poorly off they are.”
