The internet's standard response to seeing anything scary is to instruct you to "kill it with fire".

Unfortunately, one man took this advice in the wrong situation, burning down his house in a misguided attempt to kill a spider.

The unnamed Seattle resident saw a spider in his laundry room, and attempted to use a lighter and a can of spray paint to create a makeshift blowtorch. According to the Seattle Fire Department, a wall caught fire, the man wasn't able to contain it, and he fled the home when the fire started to spread.

Crews managed to extinguish the fire, but the building suffered significant structural damage; it's estimated that $60,000 of damage has been caused. The man and a woman who lived with him are currently in temporary housing.

The real kicker is that it's not certain whether the spider was actually killed or not.
