Model cars are for kids. Kids who don't like the outdoors or contact sports, but have a preference for meticulous brush work and glue placement. Which explains why we're still big fans.
Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner has taken a passion for automotive scale replicas to new, jaw-dropping heights. His series Disintegrating is a magical blend of photoshop trickery and staggering levels of patience.
Each photograph in his work appears to show a car (a Ferrari 330 P4, Mercedes-Benz 300 and Jaguar E-Type) disintegrating into its component parts - a trick not created with CGI, but by capturing suspended sections of model cars, piece by piece. Wire and string was used to keep each individual section in place, before Oefner spliced the images together in Photoshop - a process that took a staggering two months to complete.
"What looks like a car falling apart is in fact a moment in time that has been created artificially by blending hundreds of individual images together," Oefner explains. "There is a unique pleasure about artificially building a moment…freezing a moment in time is stupefying."
The work is currently on display at the M.A.D Gallery in Geneva. Check out the video below for an insight into how Oefner created his work, along with his series Hatch from earlier this year.
