JJ Abrams' Mystery Box Playing Cards

JJ Abrams' Mystery Box Playing Cards
03 March 2014

Pick a card, any card. Or don't. It's up to you.

That's the invitation offered by the master of head-scratchers JJ Abrams' and magic specialists theory11 in their new collaboration, The Mystery Box Playing Cards.

Designed and developed as a "monument to mystery", fans of all things magical have two cryptic offerings to choose from: £5.95 ($9.95) buys you a single deck of artful playing cards, designed by Abrams and theory11's Jonathan Bayme, teasingly sealed in kraft paper - we know full well you'd tear into them (so would we all).

The simply spectacular Lockbox edition (£90/$149.95) contains 12 decks, neatly housed in a handcrafted box made of 100-year-old reclaimed wood, iron branded with a Riddler-esque question mark and sealed with an alpha-numeric combination lock. The box also contains a letterpressed note from Abrams, detailing the love of mystery he inherited from his grandfather.

Bad Robot will donate $1 per deck to the creative writing charity 826 National, in an effort to inspire the next generation of book-writing, film-making creators of infuriatingly mysterious stories. Head to theory11 to join in the magic.
