Floating lamp the first in space-age furniture

The living room of the future draws closer

If a distinct lack of molten rock inside lava lamps has proven anything, it’s that when it comes to novelty light fixtures, false advertising is endemic. But be sceptical no more, as a lamp with an equally high-concept tag actually lives up to its name.

Created by Light Light (a Dutch lighting firm run by designer Angela Jansen and electrical engineer Ger Jansen), the Silhouette Floating Lamp uses electromagnets that enable its top half to levitate a few inches over its bottom half.

It may sound precariously assembled, but, in fact, its fluctuating top sector is unexpectedly durable, while the latest LED technology ensures the impressive-looking unit glows brightly without ravenous power-consumption.

At £842, it isn’t a cheap lounge accessory, but it’s nice to know you won’t have to make any more complaints to trading standards.
