Angry drunks given lollipops by police

Canadian scheme fights beer with sugar

Angry drunks given lollipops by police
21 July 2011

After watching a few too many episodes of Booze Britain, we're well aware that dealing with drunk people is the worst job in the world. Well, one of them anyway.

So, for the poor policemen given the task of wrangling inebriated and bad-tempered citizens, brainstorming new ideas has got to be pretty high up on their list.

In the city of Victoria, British Columbia, a councillor has come up with a sweet new plan (the use of sweet is about to become hilariously topical) which involves giving away lollipops in a bid to calm the drunkards down (see?!?). Councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe trialled the scheme after their Canada Day fireworks.

She claimed it was an automatic success. “They got calmer after taking the lollipops,” she said. “It had an immediate effect.” They are now aiming to make it a regular thing once the bars and pubs close at weekends.

Let's hope it travels overseas soonish. Might not work for Cheryl Cole though...
